A LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO OBLIVION
By Kara Winter, Ph.D.
I will never forget the day I walked into an inpatient psychiatric unit. It was a large city hospital in East Harlem and I was a first year social work student at NYU. It was the late 1980s when budding artists could still afford to live in the city. Small art galleries packed the area South of Houston and there was a bar called CBGBs. The city represented beauty and also utter despair. Like a monster, it was scary yet filled with excitement and utter chaos.
Stan was the first patient I met upon entering the locked inpatient unit at Metropolitan Hospital. He was about 6’4” and had hair that seemed to have a life of its own. His eyes bulged, he spoke randomly to himself and others, rolled his tongue, made voluntary hand gestures and claimed to speak to God.
